Since its founding in 1979, the Sacramento Poetry Center has been an advocate for literary artists in Sacramento and nearby regions.
SPC offers readings, workshops, writers' conferences, publications, a lending library, and more to our local community, and prides itself on being an accessible, inclusive venue.
While recognized as the premier local literary center, SPC’s publications are celebrated and collected nationally. Our publication, Landing Signals, released on October 26, 1986, was the first major anthology (print and audio) of Sacramento poets. Because of this achievement, and our ongoing commitment to publishing, the date was memorialized by Mayor Anne Rudin as “Sacramento Poetry Day” in perpetuity.
In keeping with our mission, SPC’s annual writers’ conferences and Poetry Month celebrations have featured some of the leading poets of our time, including Pulitzer Prize winners Gary Snyder and Philip Levine, former U.S. Poets Laureate Juan Filipe Herrera and Robert Hass, and literary luminaries including Lucille Clifton, Galway Kinnell, Robert Bly, Maya Angelou, Diane DiPrima, Carolyn Forche, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Dorianne Laux, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael McClure, José Montoya, Robert Creeley, and many others.
Equally important are the scores of area poets, established and emerging, who have participated in SPC events over the decades.
