The Theo Shultz Quintet brings together a fearless group of musicians—all under the age of 25—who are honoring the jazz tradition while pushing its energy and possibilities forward. For this special performance, the quintet revisits the fiery music of tenor saxophone greats Johnny Griffin and Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis. Although their names may not be as familiar to the general public as some of their contemporaries, Griffin and Davis remain towering figures among jazz musicians. Griffin was celebrated for his astonishing speed, precision, and harmonic imagination, while Davis was instantly recognizable for his muscular tone, blues-drenched phrasing, and hard-swinging intensity. Together, they helped define the thrilling “tenor battle” tradition: not simply competing, but challenging and inspiring one another through spirited musical conversation. This album re-creation gives a new generation of players the opportunity to explore that tradition in their own voices. Expect blistering saxophone exchanges, driving rhythms, soulful blues, and the unmistakable excitement of five gifted young musicians testing their limits on the bandstand. The Theo Shultz Quintet features Sam Denton and Theo Shultz on tenor saxophones, James O’Shea on piano, Alejandro Giles on bass, and Devin Jones on drums. Seatings at 6:00 PM. Dinner show at Twin Lotus Thai. Reservations online only; no phone reservations. Voluntary cover.
